Abstract

Besides being an incredibly beautiful art form, the ancient art of belly dance is also a brilliant full-body workout. Come enjoy shimmies, shakes, and sweat with one of India’s first belly dance instructors.

Outline

  • Brief introduction to belly dance and the concept of muscle isolations
  • Demonstrations of basic moves
  • Quick choreographed belly dance workout routine
  • Stretches

Requirements

A hip scarf or dupatta to tie around your waist is recommended, but not mandatory. Participants are requested to wear comfortable clothing that won’t restrict movement.

Speaker bio

Chitra, aka BombayBellyrina, is one of India’s first professional belly dance instructors and creator of the Raq That Body workout.

This might be fun to include if we do an evening social program, as an icebreaker or healthy group activity. If the audience is mostly male, how do you think they would react to participating?

That’s actually a great idea. For an icebreaker, I could structure it to be more dance and less exercise, so as not to tire people out.
As for male participants, I have had several in the past, and they’ve usually enjoyed it. Especially in a setting such as this, they find it a fun way to let loose and allow themselves to feel a little silly. That said, there are several men who shy away from it, since it is traditionally a woman’s dance.

Hi Chitra, how long do you estimate your workshop will be?

Hi Sandhya. The workshop can be tailored as per interest. If it’s a workout session, it would be between 30-45 minutes. If the preference is to have it more skewed towards dance, per Kristen’s suggestion, a minimum of an hour is ideal.

Okay, great. Can you link to a video of one of your workouts? If you’d prefer sending over email, I’m at sandhya@hasgeek.com
